This Scheme assesses archival surgical stained sections, using 4 routine muscle staining methods. In addition participants are requested to send the first suitable stained slide for an additional stain requested from the list above*.

Rationale

If a method is not specified, the laboratory / organisation is free to use any suitable technique to demonstrate the target. The methods in list B may include immunocytochemical techniques where that is the organisation’s method of choice, and must be a true representation of that case, and of the quality performed as part of routine daily workload.

Submission

4 archival stained sections plus, one additional “rotational” specialist stain is submitted for peer assessment per run, as designated on the delivery letter issued with each run.
