This Scheme assesses archival Diagnostic Cytopathology stained sections, utilising Papanicolaou and Romanowsky staining methods. The first case requested is a serous fluid specimen, the second case from the specimen type detailed on the delivery letter*.

Rationale

In the field of Diagnostic Cytopathology there are many sites for samples to be obtained from including pleural fluid, ascitic fluid, urine, sputum, thyroid, bronchial and FNA. A preparation technique is not specified, and the laboratory/organisation is free to use any suitable routine technique to a demonstrate the staining method for e.g., direct smears, cytospins, or liquid based methodologies
